1. Rationale
1.1 The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (the Foundation) manages personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988, Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.
1.2 The Foundation’s privacy policy implements the National Privacy Principles set out in the Privacy Act, which specify how organisations should collect, use, keep, secure and disclose personal information.
1.3 The National Privacy Principles give individuals a right to know what information an organisation holds about them and a right to correct that information if it is wrong.

3. Policy Statement
3.1 Types of information collected by the Foundation
3.1.1 Personal information collected by the Foundation falls under two categories:
information concerning staff and directors, as required in the normal course of human resource management
information concerning course participants, service providers, sponsors and people, organisations and companies with whom the Foundation has dealings.
3.1.2 Courses, programs and services provided by the Foundation involve collection, storage and use of personal information.
3.2 Approach to gathering personal information
3.2.2 When soliciting personal information for inclusion in a record or in a generally available publication, the Foundation will ensure that the individual concerned is made aware of:
the purpose for which the information is being collected
if the information is required by, or under law
any entity to which the Foundation usually discloses such information
any additional entity to which that entity could forward the information.
3.2.3 Request, statements or comments included in Foundation material regarding privacy or privacy related issues will reflect the Foundation’s Privacy Policy.
3.2.4 The Foundation will do everything reasonably within its power (as described in this policy) to prevent unauthorised use of personal information it collects.
3.3 Principles used by the Foundation in the collection and use of private information
3.3.1 Collection of personal information by the Foundation will seek to be fair, lawful and not intrusive. In seeking information, a person will be told our organisation's name and the purpose of collection. Any person can access their personal information. (NPP 1)
3.3.2 The Foundation will only use or disclose information for the purpose for which it was collected unless the person has consented; or the secondary purpose is related to the primary purpose and a person would reasonably expect such use or disclosure; or the use is for publicity in specified circumstances, or in circumstances related to public interest such as law enforcement and public or individual health and safety. (NPP 2)
3.3.3 The Foundation will take all reasonable steps to make sure that the personal information it collects, uses or discloses, is accurate, complete and up-to date. (NPP 3)
3.3.4 The Foundation will take all reasonable steps to protect the personal information it holds from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access modification or disclosure. (NPP 4)
3.3.5 The Foundation’s policy document outlining its information handling practices will be made available to anyone who requests a copy in writing. (NPP 5).
3.3.6 On written request, the Foundation will give an individual access to personal information it holds about that individual in accordance with the relevant Privacy Act legislation. (NPP 6)
3.3.7 Generally speaking, the Foundation will not adopt, use or disclose an identifier that has been assigned by an agency, an agent of an agency acting in its capacity as agent or a Commonwealth government agency. (NPP 7)
3.3.8 The Foundation will seek to give individuals the option to interact anonymously whenever it is lawful and practicable to do. (NPP 8)
3.3.9 The Foundation will only transfer personal information to a recipient in a foreign country in circumstances where the information will have appropriate protection. (NPP 9)
3.3.10 The Foundation will not collect sensitive information unless the individual has consented, or the collection of such information is required by law; or in other special specified circumstances, for example, information relating to health services provision and individual or public health or safety. (NPP 10)
4. Scope and Application
This policy applies to all individuals and organisations that have a relationship with the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation.
